domain name is common language name that someone chose for their site IE: ebay.com, or Nexxterra.com. This is easier to remember than a lot of numbers, which is what the computer actually understands. try to choose a name that is short and still says who or what you are. Domain Names usually have to be renewed every year. You can have Many domain names and still NOT have a web site, as you can have 1 web site and many domain names too.

What is a "website"?

A web site is a group of files on a server on the Internet. This can be for business, entertainment or education. an example of a website would be this one, Nexxterra.com. single pages are called a web page. A web site is NOT the same as a domain name, think of the Domain name as the address to a vacant piece of land, and the web Host package as the size of this piece of land, Now your web site is like the house you build on this land, you can renovate, add on and if you find you have way more visitors than expected, then you can get "more land" or upgrade your hosting package., the only problem is your address, and the land is rented, These have to be paid for on an ongoing basis. You can move your address, and move your files somewhere else if you ever wish, but if you enjoy the neighbourhood, and the service is great, I would just stay put!

Then what is a URL?   
URL is a short form for Universal Resource Locater, it is the full "path" that your web browser uses to go to a web page it usually starts with http:// and contains a domain name. It can also contain other numbers and letters and can be quite long sometimes.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a simple word or phrase that can be directly associated with your web site, your product or service. these are usually included in your website and are "indexed" by the search engines to help people find your site when looking for that "keyword"

Can I Build My Own Web Site?

Of Course!, I also recommend it as well. There are a few ways you can construct your site, the first is the MOST difficult, "Hand Coding" This is when you have an extensive knowledge of HTML and you build your page line by line. The next is much easier and the most common, that is using a WYSIWYG editor. WYSIWYG actually stands for "What You See Is What You Get" and there are many editors that let you build your site this way.

The third and in my opinion the easiest, is the on line site builder. Nexxterra offers this technology as do many other web hosts. some site builders have limitations, , although as I am more familiar with the Site Zen builder offered by Nexxterra, I can say this is only limited by YOUR imagination.

I Do Not Have The Time or Even Want to Build My Site, What Do I Do?

Simple, there are many people out there that will build you a web site at a reasonable price.Nexxterra has a great selection of "freelance" designers that have proved to us that they can care for the client in the same way we would.

Like any other service, you need to be careful, spend MORE time looking into the company and NOT just at their portfolio. Just today I was looking at 2 different designers web sites and BOTH had links to a photography web site they both claim to have designed and built, A quick phone call and I determined that the site was indeed built by only one of these firms.

Contact people in the "portfolio" and ask if they were happy. how long did it take? what company did their site? if you like the answers, Understand that the portfolio is what OTHER people wanted, just because you like what you see or even if you do not like any of the designs, talk to the designer and give them 3 or 4 web sites that you DO really like, tell them why and see what they can do for you.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the ability for people to find your web site through the search engines by typing a simple "keyword" or search term. SEO is something you can do quite simply, but as with everything in life you need to learn a little first.

There are many things you can do to make your site "search engine friendly"

The first, have interesting and informative content on your site., search engines look at WORDS only and not how pretty your site is. 

Next, page titles, page descriptions, and even the names of pictures on your site should contain information that applies to your site., each should be different as too many repeats and the search engines think you have many pages with the same stuff and so it must NOT be worth-wile sending people there, so you will NOT show until one of the very last pages!

Now, submit your site,  You can go directly to the search engines and type in your information, or you can use a site submission service to do this for you.

Submit your site also to on line directories, and directories that are specific to your industry. You can also go to forums, and chat sites and post helpful information, answer questions, and when you do be sure to try to include a link to your site.

IMPORTANT: Many companies will offer SEO services, and this can be a great value, But remember, with MILLIONS of sites just like yours, NOBODY, even GOOGLE or YAHOO can promise you first page ranking.

It is important to know that your site needs to be optimized to be found using Keywords that EVERYONE would use to find you, IE: photographers in Miami Beach, or web hosting in Florida., Anything too specific, and people would just type that directly in the address bar. IE: search for Nexxterra, or Nexxterra.com I will always be in the first page, the problem is this is NOT considered being "ranked on the first page"
